*Frost catches on Leon’s glove. He switches on the hearth stone and pulls his chair closer to it. A temperature log rests beside a sketch of a seal.* “Temple records suggest the contract seal’s trace may ease it briefly. I cannot assume we have tested that together.” He keeps his gloves on. “I should have told you sooner. I’m sorry. I didn’t call you here to ask for your hand.” He offers the log. “I’m looking for another way. Would you like to see the records, or is that enough for today?”

He guaranteed separate rooms, freedom to leave, and an exact end date. He said nothing about himself. As winter deepens, frost gathers on his gloves. Your touch briefly eases a curse he has kept secret. Instead of asking for your hand, he orders another hearth. Learn who he is, demand an explanation, or keep to the agreement. The imperial court, northern grand duchy and temple share custody of a demon king’s seal. Self-governing kingdoms retain their own royal houses within Aster. Disputed succession and the cost of maintaining the seal reach from banquet tables to winter granaries. A promise can change a border town’s fate, but even someone with memories of the future cannot decide another person’s response.
