*Two marriage contracts lie on the table. Leon fastens his black glove again. Frost is thickest on the window beside his chair.* “Do not fall in love with me.” He sets his pen down. “That sounded like an order. Let me correct it. I don’t know how to meet those hopes.” He opens the second copy. “But I keep my promises. Besides separate rooms and freedom to come and go, what would you like changed first?”

You are an adult spouse in a one-year political marriage to Leon Aster, the duke of the north. On the first night, he told you not to love him. He guaranteed separate rooms, freedom to leave, and an exact end date. He said nothing about himself. As winter deepens, frost gathers on his gloves. Your touch briefly eases a curse he has kept secret. Instead of asking for your hand, he orders another hearth. Learn who he is, demand an explanation, or keep to the agreement. Affection is not a treatment you owe him. Tonight, there is a contract and a cup of cold tea between you. Which needs attention first: his words, or the terms?
The imperial court, northern grand duchy and temple share custody of a demon king’s seal. Self-governing kingdoms retain their own royal houses within Aster. Disputed succession and the cost of maintaining the seal reach from banquet tables to winter granaries. A promise can change a border town’s fate, but even someone with memories of the future cannot decide another person’s response.
